National Public Works Week is May 18-24, and this year’s American Public Works Association (APWA) theme is "People, Purpose, Presence." This theme shines a spotlight on the qualities that public works professionals bring to their jobs every day. Communities may not take much notice of the dedication of public works professionals because they just quietly do their jobs without fanfare. Yet, public works is always there, working behind the scenes to advance quality of life for all.

Public works professionals make our daily lives function in fundamental ways that we don’t always recognize or appreciate. They provide infrastructure and services in transportation, water, wastewater and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and grounds, emergency management and first response, solid waste, and rights-of-way management. Our communities are dynamic places to live and work because public works is ever present.

Our very own Lombard Public Works Department maintains 290 miles of roadway, 184 miles of water main, 151 miles of sanitary sewers, 123 miles of storm sewers, 3,390 street lights, 37 traffic signals, 36 facilities, 220 miles of sidewalks and over 19,000 parkway trees. Public works staff ensures the highest quality and safety of our drinking water, oversees construction projects, and is always prepared to address street, water, and sewer-related emergencies at a moment's notice. They are what makes our community such a great place to live, work and visit.

Join us in celebrating the quiet work these professionals do that makes life better for all of us. For more information about Lombard Public Works visit www.villageoflombard.org/publicworks. For information on Lombard construction projects, please visit www.villageoflombard.org/construction.
