[ARCHIVED] Life Saving Awards Presented at Village Board Meeting

During yesterday’s Village Board meeting, Lombard resident Sarah Vogel, Police Officer E. Gouty, Firefighter/Paramedics Ryan Carlson, Rob Blockinger, Tyler Gunn, Bob Hopper, and Fire Lt. Joe Shark were recognized for their lifesaving actions last month.

On the morning of Sunday, September 25th, Michael Volyanyuk, a 25-year-old Lombard resident was finishing a 5-mile run with his girlfriend when he suddenly suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed on the Prairie Path. Fortunately, his girlfriend, a teacher trained in CPR, recognized that he was in cardiac arrest and quickly provided high-quality continuous CPR while another bystander called 911. Du-Comm, our 911 dispatch center, dispatched the Lombard Fire Department and Police Department to the scene.

Within three minutes of the call, Officer E. Gouty arrived and quickly applied his AED to the patient, indicating the need for a defibrillation shock, which was delivered within 36-seconds. By this time, Lombard Paramedics had also arrived and assisted the Officer. Paramedics continued to provide Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), administered lifesaving medication, and rapidly transported the patient to the hospital.

During the Village Board meeting, Michael stated, “I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the rapid response of all these people here.” He added, “I’m just thankful for the training, the rapid response, and everything lining up in the perfect spot for me to be here today.”

Please join us in thanking Ms. Vogel and the members of our Lombard Police and Fire Departments for their heroic actions and swift response on this call, which undoubtedly helped save this young man’s life.
