[ARCHIVED] 2022 Senior of the Year Winners Announced

On Wednesday, October 5, Lombard's 2022 Senior Man and Senior Woman of the Year Awards were recognized during the 16th Annual Senior Fair at the Madison Meadow Athletic Center. The 2022 Senior Man of the Year has been awarded to Robert “Steve” Anderson. A devoted citizen of his community and country, Steve is a veteran, having served in the Army from 1972 to 1992. Within the community, Steve volunteers many hours at The Outreach House where his “behind the scenes” contributions positively impact the lives of many. Steve is also one of the biggest supporters of Glenbard East sports teams and rarely misses any games with his favorite sports being volleyball, basketball and football. 

The 2022 Senior Woman of the Year has been awarded to Audrey Schuurmann. A Lombard resident since 2012 and known by her friends as the person to call when something needs to get accomplished in her community. Audrey led the restoration of the highly visible Sheldon Peck Homestead native garden with the Lombard Historical Society and Garden Club and also chairs the Helen Plum Library plant committee. At Calvary Episcopal she manages the vegetable garden that raises produce for the food pantry, is a stalwart of the stewardship committee and is a trusted member serving in various essential roles.

Nominees for the 2022 Senior of the Year included Paul Tuma and Velta Kopacek. 

“It’s our honor to be able to recognize these inspiring Lombard residents,” said Trustee Dan Militello, Chairperson of the Community Relations Committee, which organized the event.  “They set the example that we all aspire to through their volunteerism and dedication to our community.” 

The Senior Fair was attended by more than 250 seniors and offered various services including flu shots, COVID-19 boosters, blood pressure checks, and useful information from more than 40 vendors. The Senior Fair is run by the Community Relations Committee which consists of Chairperson Dan Militello, Alternate Chairperson Trustee Bernie Dudek, and committee members Ahmed Ali, Pamela Bedard, Michael Ledonne, Kaveria Lezza, Gladys Piper, Amanda Rosengren, Sharon Vish and Barbara Ware.
