To help community residents safely dispose of their syringes and other medical-use needles, also known as “sharps”, the Village of Lombard has installed a sharps drop box in the lobby of Lombard Village Hall (255 E. Wilson Ave). Residents can safely discard their medical use needles in the container during lobby walk-in hours, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Sharps Disposal program is intended for Lombard residents only (no businesses) and is designed to offer people who are dependent on injectable medications a convenient location to safely dispose of their medical sharps.
Free sharps containers may be available from a doctor, hospital, health insurance, or medication supplier. If a sharps user cannot obtain a sharps container, they may dispose of sharps at home by using a durable plastic container with a screw-top lid, such as a laundry detergent bottle. To do so, place sharps into the container, secure the lid, and tape the lid shut. Label your container “SHARPS – DO NOT RECYCLE”, and place the container in your household trash. Never throw away loose needles and other sharps directly into trash cans or recycling bins. Also, sharps should never be flushed down the toilet.
