[ARCHIVED] Halloween 2025: Be Safe & Have Fun

photo of two children holding orange jack o lantern buckets for trick or treating

Halloween is on Friday, October 31st, and the Village is recommending trick-or-treating hours from 3:00  to 7:00 p.m.

Residents who plan to hand out candy are encouraged to turn on their porch lights to show that trick-or-treaters are welcome. Parents should walk with young children and remind older kids to stay with friends, visit only well-lit homes, and cross streets at intersections. Everyone should stay alert and watch for traffic.

To help make Halloween enjoyable and respectful for everyone, the Village has created a downloadable “No Trick-or-Treating” sign that residents can display near their front door if they choose not to participate. Simply print the sign at home and place it in a visible spot to let trick-or-treaters know your household is not handing out candy this year. Leaving your porch light off is another clear signal. Please note, the Village will not provide printed copies of the signs.

Trick-or-treaters and their families are asked to be respectful of homes that are not participating by skipping those that have their lights off or a sign posted.

Drivers should use extra caution on Halloween, as there will be more children walking along our streets and crossing intersections. Please slow down, stay alert and watch for kids who may be difficult to see in dark costumes or low light.

Safety Tips to Keep Your Children Safe

  • Always accompany your children when trick-or-treating. If your child will be trick-or-treating without you, plan a familiar route and set a curfew.
  • Teach children to look both ways before crossing the street, and to use traffic signals and crosswalks. Review additional safety rules, including staying with the group, walking only on the sidewalk, approaching only clearly lit homes, and never going inside a home or car for a treat.
  • Check your children's candy before they eat it. Discard anything that's not sealed, has torn packaging, or looks questionable. If you have young children, weed out gum, peanuts, hard candies, and other choking hazards. If your child has food allergies, check candy labels carefully. When in doubt, throw it out!
  • ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. Report any dangerous or suspicious activities to Lombard Police.
