[ARCHIVED] Hydrant Flushing Begins Week of September 2

The Lombard Public Works Department will begin its annual hydrant flushing program on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, weather permitting. The program will continue for approximately six weeks, with work scheduled Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Some overnight flushing will also occur to help reduce traffic impacts.

Hydrant flushing is a routine maintenance activity that helps maintain water quality and system reliability. Flushing removes natural mineral and sediment buildup from water mains, ensures hydrants are operating properly in case of emergencies, and provides important flow data to confirm the system’s ability to meet daily and fire protection demands. \

During the program, residents may temporarily notice lower water pressure, discolored water with a reddish tint caused by iron deposits, or cloudy “milky” water caused by harmless air bubbles that typically clear within minutes. These temporary changes do not affect the safety of the water supply.

Residents are encouraged to take simple steps to minimize any inconvenience. If water appears discolored, wait a few minutes before running cold water until it clears. To avoid laundry stains, refrain from washing clothes while flushing work is underway in your area and check water clarity in a laundry sink before starting a load. If low water pressure occurs, check faucet aerators for sediment buildup. For older homes with lead service lines, running cold water for a few minutes each morning is also recommended.

For safety, residents are reminded not to walk or drive through water flowing from hydrants, as the pressure can cause injury or damage vehicles. Hydrants will be staffed by Public Works crews during flushing. Parents are asked to keep children away from open hydrants and to avoid playing in the water.
