[ARCHIVED] Fire Department Warns Residents of Fireworks Use

As the Fourth of July celebrations approach, the Lombard Fire Department is reminding residents about the risk of serious injury associated with fireworks use.

Every year, preventable accidents occur, resulting in burn injuries, property damage, and even loss of life. According to a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, between 2008 and 2023, injuries from fireworks have increased overall, despite recent data showing a steady decline since the peak in 2020 during the pandemic, when public displays were canceled. In 2023, at least eight people died from fireworks-related incidents, and an estimated 9,700 were injured in incidents involving fireworks.

Additionally, residents are reminded that the discharging of fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets, and roman candles, is not allowed in Illinois under state regulations, and is a violation of state law and Village ordinances. Novelty fireworks, such as snakes, sparklers, and party-poppers, are not regulated by the state.

The safest way to enjoy the Fourth of July is to watch a professional fireworks display. However, if using novelty fireworks, please be sure to follow these important safety tips:

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
  • Older children should use fireworks only under the close supervision of an adult.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from onlookers, houses and flammable materials.
  • Light one device at a time; maintain a safe distance after lighting.
  • Do not allow any running or horseplay while fireworks are being used.
  • Never ignite devices in a container.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire.

Anyone with questions about fireworks safety or regulations in the Village of Lombard may contact Fire Marshal Perry Johnson at (630) 873-4576.
