[ARCHIVED] Village Completes Major Sewer Rehabilitation Project

The Village of Lombard is proud to announce the successful completion of a major rehabilitation project that renewed a significant portion of the community’s largest combined sewer system. Originally constructed in the 1920s, this system has been a critical part of Lombard’s stormwater and wastewater network for nearly a century. Over the past two years, the Village restored 2.1 miles of large-diameter sewer, improving system reliability, protecting homes and businesses, and strengthening infrastructure for the future.

What made this project unique?

This project was unique in its use of innovative trenchless technology, which allowed crews to renew aging sewer pipes and manholes from within. The system was lined with a geopolymer material, a durable, ceramic-like mortar designed to rebuild and reinforce deteriorated structures. This modern approach avoided major road closures, required no digging, and kept the sewer fully operational throughout the construction period.

In addition, a specialized in-pipe bypass system allowed work to move forward with minimal disruption to daily life. These techniques significantly reduced construction time, environmental impacts, and restoration costs, making the project both efficient and community-friendly.

Who led the work?

The project was led by the Village’s Public Works Department, with design and construction engineering support from Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. of Rosemont, and installation work by Vortex Lining System of Houston, Texas. The effort was completed on time, under budget, and in full regulatory compliance, supported by more than $15 million in Illinois EPA State Revolving Fund low-interest loan financing.

Community and Environmental Benefits

This long-term investment brings several important benefits to the community:

  • Reduced risk of basement backups and sewer overflows
  • Lower “clear water” flows to the Glenbard Wastewater Authority, reducing treatment costs
  • Minimal construction impacts to Lombard Common Park, South Main Street, local roads, and surrounding neighborhoods
  • A smaller carbon footprint due to reduced excavation and use of sustainable lining materials

A Long-Term Investment in Lombard’s Future

This project strengthens one of Lombard’s most critical underground systems, ensuring safe and efficient service for decades to come. It reflects the Village’s commitment to responsible infrastructure management, sustainability, and community-focused solutions.

Thank you to our residents, businesses, and partners for your support throughout this important effort!
