Fix a Leak Week: Save Water and Money at Home

The Village encourages residents to take part in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Fix a Leak Week, taking place March 16 - 22, 2026. This annual initiative highlights how simple actions at home can help conserve water and reduce utility costs.

Household leaks can waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water nationwide each year, often from common sources like dripping faucets, running toilets and outdoor irrigation systems. Taking a few minutes to check for leaks can make a meaningful difference for your home and community.

Residents are also encouraged to use the Village’s WaterSmart Portal to monitor water usage and set up leak alerts. This tool provides helpful insights to better manage water use and avoid unexpected costs.

New Water Tower Project Underway Near Yorktown Mall

Construction is underway on a new 1.5-million-gallon elevated water tower along Butterfield Road, just east of Yorktown Mall. The project is part of the Village’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and modernize Lombard’s water system, particularly for areas south of Roosevelt Road.

Water towers play an important role in maintaining consistent water pressure, meeting peak demand and providing a reserve supply during emergencies. The additional capacity was identified through long-term planning efforts and will support continued growth in the area while helping meet regional water system requirements.

Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2027, with the tower anticipated to be operational in early 2028. The project is funded through a combination of a Rebuild Illinois grant, Butterfield TIF funds and the Village’s Water and Sewer Capital Reserve Fund.

Lombard Fire Department Responds to Vehicle Fire

On the afternoon of March 13, the Lombard Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the 1400 block of Oak Meadow Court. While crews were en route, reports indicated the fire had spread from a contractor van in the driveway to a nearby home.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and found the van fully involved, with flames extending to the home and a neighboring residence. Crews quickly brought the fire under control, limiting damage to the exterior of both homes and the vehicle. No injuries were reported, and both homes remain habitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Lombard Fire Department was assisted on scene by several neighboring agencies.

Controlled Burns Scheduling Update

The Village's Public Works Department will conduct controlled burns at several locations throughout the community to help maintain healthy native vegetation and improve natural areas. These carefully managed burns are part of routine environmental maintenance that supports plant health and habitat restoration.

Due to the winter weather experienced this week, the controlled burns have been rescheduled and are expected to take place between March 30 and April 6, weather permitting. Residents will receive one-day advance notice before burns take place.

Learn more about the locations and schedule on the Village website.
