Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Hazardous wastes from households are not regulated in the same way as hazardous wastes from industry and businesses simply because the costs and efforts to create and manage an enforcement agency to monitor household hazardous waste materials and their safe disposal would be overwhelming, so the burden becomes an individual and personal responsibility. The US Environmental Protection Agency states that Americans generate 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste (HHW) every year, and the average home has accumulated as much as 100 pounds of HHW. Household hazardous waste consists of the unwanted or unusable portion of consumer products that contain substances that can harm human health or the environment.

Lombard is fortunate to be located near a regional collection site. This site is located at:

Items are accepted Saturdays & Sundays (except Holidays) 9AM-2PM

Residents may dispose of LED and CFL bulbs as normal trash. However, CFLs may optionally be disposed as HHW at a disposal location such as a Home Depot store (see https://www.dupageco.org/OnlineRecyclingGuide/) or the Naperville HHW site.  

Residents may dispose of CO detectors and smoke alarms as normal trash after removing the battery. However, they may optionally be returned to the manufacturer since most include a small amount of radioactive material and are not acceptable as HHW.  Look at the back of the unit and the manufacturer’s website for recycling/disposal instructions. Waste Management’s At Your Door Special Collection

As an alternative to the HHW site in Naperville, Lombard residents may also utilize Waste Management’s At Your Door Special Collection. Per the Village’s Contract, Waste Management is providing 180 no-cost pick-ups annually for Household Hazardous Waste and other hard-to-dispose-of items, as listed here. Residents make arrangements directly with Waste Management and requests beyond the first 180 within each contract year are subject to a fee. Scheduling begins each year on April 1st. It is suggested that residents should coordinate with neighbors to combine small volumes into a larger amount for collection.
