[ARCHIVED] Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over this Halloween

The Lombard Police Department urges drivers to commit to sober driving this Halloween as children and their families walk through neighborhoods after dark in search of candy and spooky fun. If you will be out scaring up a good time, remember to plan for a sober ride home.

Beginning October 16 through October 31, 2022, Lombard Police will have increased enforcement on the road to crack down on drunk and impaired drivers.

"Halloween is scary enough without adding impaired driving to the mix," said Lombard Traffic Safety Unit Officer Dan Herrera. "If you know you'll be partying this Halloween, make sure you designate a sober driver to get you home safely. Don't put yourself, or others, at risk by driving impaired by alcohol, marijuana or any other impairing substance."

Lombard Police urge everyone to follow these simple tips to help keep our roads safe this Halloween:

  • Plan for a safe and sober way home before you go out: designate a sober driver, take public transportation, use your favorite ride-sharing service, or call a sober friend or family member.
  • Remember, walking while impaired can be just as dangerous as driving impaired. Designate a sober friend to walk you home.
  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement as soon as you can safely do so.
  • If you see an impaired person about to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely.
  • Always buckle up - it's your best defense against an impaired driver.

While Lombard Police arrest impaired drivers year-round, increased Halloween enforcement is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
