The Village of Lombard is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as a 2021 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, for its dedication to urban forestry. The Village has been recognized as a Tree City USA for 32 consecutive years.
Started in 1976, the Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Lombard achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four core standards, including maintaining a tree board or department, having a tree-care ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita and conducting an Arbor Day observance.
Lombard also received its 25th Arbor Day Foundation's Growth Award, which recognizes major milestones and annual activities that combine to build a sustainable community forestry program. This inaugural award was given to municipalities based on forestry funding/staff/training; measuring tree inventory; urban planning; planting/protecting parkway trees; and community involvement.
Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.
