On Saturday, December 1, Lombard Police Officers brought local children to go holiday shopping for their family members, as part of Lombard’s Annual Shop with a Cop program, sponsored by the Lombard Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association (LCPAAA).
Lombard Police Officers picked up the children from their homes and brought them to Lombard Village Hall, where they were escorted by a convoy of squad cars to go shopping at Target, where they picked out items for their families with help from Lombard Police Officers. They then returned to Village Hall where they were greeted by Police K9 Officer Thor, as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus. LCPAAA volunteers helped to wrap the gifts in festive paper and hosted a lunch. At the end of the event, the children were driven home in squad cars filled with gifts, trays of cookies, gift baskets, and a coupon for a free Christmas tree donated by the TriTown YMCA.
“I’m proud to say that we’ve been doing this for 20 years,” said Lombard Police Sergeant and liaison to the LCPAAA, Sherie Eakins. “We love that we get to serve Lombard and its residents and this is a great way to show that we really do care about this community. We look forward to it every year.”
The purpose of Shop with a Cop is to foster positive relationships between youth and law enforcement. The LCPAAA selects the children based on the child’s good character, hard work at school, and other factors. The LCPAAA funds this program through community events throughout the year as well as soliciting funds, selling merchandise, and receiving donations from area merchants. Donations addressed to the Lombard Police Department are also received through the mail.
“The LCPAAA volunteers work year round to make this event possible,” said LCPAAA Jim Krupka. “Our 20th Shop with a Cop program was made possible through the fundraising efforts of Alumni members, the Lombard PD who volunteered their time, and the generous support of Lombard Businesses.”
