Lombard Police are reminding residents that scammers and con artists will pose as contractors, repairmen and utility workers to commit crimes of theft, burglary and home repair fraud, often focusing on taking advantage of the elderly.
Several Lombard residents have contacted Police with reports of being offered home repair work for a low cost, only to discover the repair was not completed properly or that they the cost is much higher than originally agreed upon.
Ruse Burglaries can occur when a resident is distracted in one area of the property, while other criminals break into the residence in different location of the home. Scammers approach a victim and claim to be utility workers, Village employees, cable TV technicians or contractors. The suspects will then gain entry to the residence using the ruse of checking a potential alleged problem or needing something (drink of water, use the phone, etc.). Once inside the home, one of the suspects will keep the victim occupied while one or more additional suspects enter the home and commit a theft, generally taking only cash and jewelry.
Licensed solicitors are required to carry a Village permit and identification with them at all times. The Village of Lombard maintains a list of solicitors that have permits online at www.villageoflombard.org/solicitors. If you are approached by someone who does NOT have a solicitor permit clearly visible, or is unable to produce a Village issued permit, dial 9-1-1 immediately. Residents are reminded to proceed with caution regarding door-to-door home repair offers.
Please note that the Village of Lombard is currently conducting a Village-wide Water Meter Replacement Program. Residents will arrange an appointment prior to their installation and installers will have a Village issued ID card, and identifiable vehicles.
