New Firefighter and Police Officers, and Police Promotions


At a reception at Village Hall on Thursday, November 7, the Lombard Fire Department welcomed a new Firefighter, and the Lombard Police Department welcomed three new Police Officers and two promotions.

For the new officers and firefighter, we welcome you to the Village of Lombard! We also congratulate Lt. Grage and Sgt. Kohl on their promotions and thank all of our Police and Fire staff for their service.

• Joe Stegeman is from Carol Stream, and his uncle retired from Law Enforcement in Aurora, CO. Joe graduated from Glenbard North High school and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Lewis University. He is 25 years old and was recently married in May.

• Joe Grage was promoted to Lieutenant. Joe is a graduate from Glenbard East High school, received his Bachelors from Benedictine University, served as a Police Explorer from 1991-1993, a DU-COMM dispatcher for 4 years, and a CSO in North Glen Ellyn for 4 years.

• Michael Vazquez grew up in Chicago and graduated from Roberto Clemente High School. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Law and Justice, and Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. previously worked as a Juvenile Justice Specialist for the State of Illinois with the Department of Juvenile Justice in Warrenville.

• James Kohl was promoted to Sergeant. James graduated from Willlowbrook High School in 2002 and from DePaul in 2008. He worked as a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the City of Rolling Meadows and was hired by Lombard in 2008.

• Alex Martino is a new Police Officer. He graduated high school from Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park and earned his bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University. Alex has also worked as a Surveillance Specialist with the FBI.

• Kevin Matthews was sworn in as Lombard’s newest Firefighter. Kevin comes to us from the Warrenville Fire Protection District, where he was in their Cadet program and later a Paid on Call Firefighter/EMT. He attended Paramedic School at Edward Hospital and was a Contract FF/PM for Warrenville as well as remaining POC. Kevin is currently a student at Western Illinois University working towards earning a Bachelors in Fire Service Administration.
