In April, the Lombard Police Department focused on distracted driving violations as part of the National Safety Council’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Illinois’ Inaugural Distracted Driving Awareness Week (4/24-4/28).
Throughout the month, Lombard Police Officers issued 184 citations and over 100 warnings for distracted driving violations. Ninety-nine (99) citations were issued and 53 warnings given during the week of 4/24-4/28. Information about the dangers of distracted driving was printed in the Village’s Pride newsletter, sent to residents via the Village’s e-newsletter, and shared on social media.
“We can’t stress the dangers of distracted driving enough. Unfortunately, despite educational efforts and awareness, these types of preventable crashes killed 3,477 people in 2015, which was a 9% increase from 2014,” said Traffic Safety Officer Sgt. Joe Grage. “We are reminding people to put their phones down! A text can wait! We don’t want any residents to become a statistic.”
