Spring Flood Awareness: Tips to Help Reduce Flooding Risks

Community Updates Posted on March 20, 2026

As spring and summer approach, the Village reminds residents that these seasons bring an increased risk of flooding due to factors such as frozen ground, snowmelt and heavy rainstorms. Significant flooding can occur even outside of designated floodplain areas, as experienced during past events in the community.

Residents can take simple steps to help reduce localized flooding:

  • Do not alter grading or fill areas on your property without a Village permit
  • Avoid placing items such as sheds or raised garden beds in drainage paths
  • Keep storm drain lids clear of leaves and debris to ensure proper water flow
  • Make sure downspouts direct water away from your home and neighboring properties

It is also important to understand that heavy or intense rainfall can overwhelm storm systems, leading to temporary street flooding or water buildup. Some areas of Lombard have older combined sewer systems that may be more susceptible to backups during large storm events.

The Village offers programs to help residents address drainage concerns, including an Overhead Sewer Grant and a Residential Drainage Program for qualifying properties. Residents are also encouraged to consider flood insurance, as standard policies do not cover flood damage and there is a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect.
