Veterans

The Village of Lombard holds our Veterans to the highest esteem and as such we celebrate and honor their contributions to our country. Each year we pay tribute to Lombard's Veterans with a  Memorial Day Ceremony at our Veterans' Memorial located in Sunken Garden in Lombard Common Park. The Village also provides a "Welcome Home" program for Lombard-resident Veterans who have completed their time serving our country.

Memorial Day Ceremony

Each year, the Village hosts a Memorial Day Ceremony in the Sunken Garden at Lombard Common Park on Memorial Day at Noon, to honor the service of Veterans and the memory of those who have paid the ultimate price. This annual event takes place on Memorial day, and features Veteran speakers, live musical performances, local leaders, a ceremonial bell ringing, and a cannon salute. The event follows with visits to area cemeteries where Lombard Veterans have been laid to rest.

Veterans Memorial at Sunken Garden

The Veterans Memorial is located in a beautiful park, and is also known as "The Rock". This memorial includes a plaque of Lombardian Veterans that "Gave Their Lives for Our Country", and lists the names of service men and women who died during World War II and in Vietnam. The Sunken Garden is located at Lombard Common Park, near the intersection of Grace and Maple Streets.

Veteran's Day 2018: Monday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m.

The Village of Lombard will be recognizing Veterans Day with a ceremony on Monday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m., at the Sunken Garden in Lombard Common Park, located near the intersection of Grace and Maple Streets. The ceremony is traditionally held on Veterans Day (November 11) but will be recognized on Monday, November 12, 2018  to accommodate resident and veteran obligations related to religious services.

Lombard Village President Keith Giagnorio will welcome attendees and Rabbi Frederick Kamil from Congregation Etz Chaim in Lombard will open the ceremony with an invocation. The keynote speaker will be Howard Hill and students from Glenbard East High School will perform the “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America”. Participating students include singer Kameron Alcantara and buglers, Ryan Valdivia and Ben Fusco.

In an effort to remember the outstanding courage and commitment to freedom made by our veterans, Village President Giagnorio invites all residents, scout troops and families to attend. Residents interested in sitting during the short ceremony are invited to bring lawn chairs. Village President Giagnorio encourages those who cannot attend to take a moment on Veterans Day at 11 a.m., to remember those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The event is organized by Lilac VFW Post 5815 and the Village of Lombard. For more information contact Communications Coordinator Avis Meade at (630)620-5718 or visit the Village’s website at villageoflombard.org/veterans.
