Village of Lombard initiates recycling for corrugated plastic signs

recycle 1

Corrugated plastic signs (campaign signs) are not easily recyclable since they differ chemically from plastics numbered 1 through 5. To help address this need, a new recycling program has been created.

The new program was started by Lombard Public Works, Lakeshore Recycling Services, and SCARCE to reduce landfilled waste due to corrugated plastic.

Two containers will be available at Lombard Public Works at 1051 S. Hammerschmidt Avenue, April 5-17. One container will be for corrugated plastic and the second will be for steel posts. The public is welcome to bring such signs and posts for recycling during this period. The materials will be recycled by Lakeshore Recycling Services, which has recently acquired K. Hoving Companies of West Chicago.

This program is limited to corrugated plastic, which must be processed for recycling in a specialized manner.  When placed in curbside recycling, corrugated plastic is removed for disposal in landfills since it would chemically contaminate the other plastics, rendering them unusable.

SCARCE, a nonprofit in Glen Ellyn that works on sustainability, will collect sign quantities greater than 50 in DuPage County.  This assistance is primarily offered to municipal offices, political organizations, and school clubs.  SCARCE may be reached at (630) 545-9710 or

Contact Lombard Public Works at (630) 620-5740 or  for more information.
