Lombard Public Works has announced the reopening of the Illinois Route 53 and Madison Street intersection, and the Hill Avenue bridge effective December 16, 2016. Both locations have been under construction for the past several months.
The Hill Avenue Bridge Project removed and replaced the existing bridge structure over the East Branch of the DuPage River. The deteriorated structure precluded heavier vehicles including school buses from crossing the bridge. The new Hill Avenue bridge will accommodate all traffic.
The completed improvements at IL Rte. 53 and Madison St. intersection include the lessening of a steep roadway slope on Madison St., in order to provide greater safety for vehicles. In addition, new sidewalks have been placed for pedestrian use. Due to construction upgrades, traffic traveling south on IL Rte. 53 is now allowed to turn left (east) at Madison St., which leads into the Village of Lombard. The use of the new left turn lane is approved by the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the installation of a traffic signal at this location is scheduled for completion in mid-2017.
