Change your clocks change your batteries, Nov. 6

The Lombard Fire Department is reminding residents that when it’s time to change your clocks, it’s time to change the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Daylight-saving time ends Sunday, November 6, and everyone is encouraged to use the extra hour they “gain” to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and to test all of the alarms in their home. The Lombard Fire Department encourages residents to adopt this simple, lifesaving habit: replace all smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries when changing clocks each year to match the beginning and end of daylight savings.

“The National Fire Protection Association® reports that 71% of smoke alarms which failed to operate had missing, disconnected or dead batteries,” says Fire Marshal Chuck Riforgiate. Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year, testing those alarms and reminding others to do the same are some of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce these tragic deaths and injuries. Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends that smoke alarms in homes should be replaced every 10 years and having both ionization and photo electric smoke alarms are best to alert people to all types of home fires.
