On Wednesday, October 5, Lombard's Senior Man and Senior Woman of the Year Awards were presented during the 11th Annual Senior Fair at the Community Building at Lombard Common Park.

The 2016 Senior Man of the Year is Steve Spoden. Spoden has worked for the Lombardian Newspaper for many years, but was nominated for going above and beyond his job when spotlighting community groups, local organizations, and individuals. Often attending late night, early morning, or weekend events, Spoden’s nomination stated he was responsible for countless photos on refrigerators around town, and helped to strengthen the Lombard community.

Marymae Meyer is the Lombard Senior of the Year for 2016. Meyer has dedicated her time and efforts in volunteering in Lombard. This includes cataloging the Lilacs in Lilacia Park and becoming a Lilac expert in order to improve the horticulture health of the park. Meyer also has been a long standing volunteer for community events, assisting in the Easter Egg Hunt and Jinglebell Jubilee, and organizing “Team Lombard” for the Komen Chicago Race for the Cure. Meyer’s nomination refers to her bright spirit and warm hospitality as a pillar of Lilac Pride.

“We have a lot to learn from those who have paved the way for us,” said Trustee Robyn Pike, Chairperson of the Community Relations Committee, which organized the event. “Lombard is home to many senior citizens who are very active in our community. We are thankful that so many of you choose to use your free time by giving back to your neighbors. Lombard is stronger because of you. Today, we were honored to not only recognize our Seniors of the Year, but all of our senior citizens.”

The Senior Fair was attended by approximately 300 seniors and offered flu shots, massages and useful information from more than 30 vendors. The Senior Fair is run by the Community Relations Committee which consists of Chairperson Trustee Robyn Pike, Alternate Chairperson Trustee William Ware, and committee members, Ahmed Ali, Pamela Bedard, Jenelle Hardtke, Michael Ledonne, Sharon Vish, Barb Ware, Gladys Piper and Anthony Pacilli.
