Lombard Officer Manuel Camuy Presented with Award of Valor for Rescuing Woman

Award of Valor

Lombard Police Officer, Manuel Camuy was presented the Award of Valor during a Village Board meeting on September 3, for his role in saving the life of a woman while on duty.

Officer Manuel Camuy received the distinguished Award of Valor from Lombard Police Chief Ray Byrne, for his quick thinking that helped save the life of suicidal woman in distress. “Officer Camuy had to make a lot of split second decisions in a small amount of time,” said Chief Byrne. “He had to navigate a very tense and dangerous situation in a very careful way.”

Officer Camuy responded to a call reporting a woman in distress on the top of a six story parking structure, and while negotiators and mental health professionals were en route, the situation became more desperate and Camuy took action. Chief Byrne described how Officer Camuy took advantage of a brief moment when the woman looked away, in order to rush toward the woman, wrap his arms around her waist and safely remove her from the ledge.

Chief Byrne went on to describe the various levels of team work that played a part in the positive outcome, citing the professionalism and impressive actions of Officer Neil Eriksen and Community Safety Officer Rick Schipp, who both received letters of commendation for their roles in the situation.
Officer Camuy was joined by family and fellow officers as he received his award at a Village Board of Trustees meeting that began with a moment of silence to honor recently fallen Fox Lake Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz and a statement of thanks from President Giagnorio. “With so many Police Officers with us tonight, I want to take a moment and say, from myself, the Board, and every Lombardian – to the men and women who put that uniform on every day, we appreciate it,” said Giagnorio. “We all fully understand the danger you are in every time you put that uniform on, and we thank you.”

Officer Camuy thanked the Board, those in attendance and the Lombard Police Department. “I’m very proud to serve the Village of Lombard. They have been very good to me and my family for the past 12 years, and it feels great to give something back,” said Officer Camuy. “I’m grateful and honored to be appreciated this way and I look forward to the rest of my years here.”
