The Lombard Police Department was first accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in November 1991.  We are proud that we were one of the first departments in DuPage County to become accredited.  Accreditation takes place ever three years. We achieved reaccreditation status in 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011 and it is expected were reaccredited in November 2014.  We remain in compliance with those standards under which accreditation was awarded and will continue to file annual reports with the Commission that testify to continuing compliance.  CALEA's international standards guide us in providing quality service delivery and challenge us continually to a commitment to excellence.

CALEA was formed in 1979 to establish a body of standards designed to increase law enforcement agency capabilities to prevent and control crime; increase agency effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of law enforcement services; increase cooperation and coordination with other law enforcement agencies and with other agencies of the criminal justice system; and increase citizen and employee confidence in the goals, objectives, policies, and practices of the agency. In addition, the Commission was formed to develop an accreditation process that provides law enforcement agencies an opportunity to voluntarily demonstrate that they meet an established set of professional standards or best police practices.

Every three years law enforcement executives come to the Lombard Police Department to confirm that we continue to meet the standards set by CALEA. During this time, the assessors take public comment by mail, e-mail, phone, or during a public hearing. The public is invited to give input on the Lombard Police Department to this independent team of assessors as to whether the Lombard Police Department should or should not be re-accredited. While we welcome your input to us directly at any time, we also want to let you know of this opportunity should you wish to address an independent assessment team.
