1. *What is considered the parkway?

The parkway is that portion of the Village right-of-way that lies between the street and the property line.

2. *Who is responsible for maintenance of the parkway?

By Village Code, the adjacent property owner is responsible for maintenance (mowing, watering & restoration) of the parkway and driveway apron, except when the Village has dug there within the past 12 months.

3. *Who maintains the parkway trees?

The Village's Forestry Division (Public Works Department) maintains the parkway trees.

4. *How do I get a tree planted in my parkway?

If there is sufficient room and the budget allows the Village will plant a tree in your parkway. Call Public Works to have someone check for adequate spacing.

5. *I don't like my parkway tree, will the Village remove it?

No, the Village will only remove trees that are dead, diseased or hazardous.

6. *How often are parkway trees trimmed?

The Forestry Division tries to trim all small trees (<6" dia.) every three years. Larger trees are trimmed on a 5-7 year rotation. Trees are also trimmed upon request if warranted.

7. *Will the Village remove a parkway tree if the roots are getting into my sewer line?

No, tree roots are not able to break a sewer pipe, an opening must already be present. Therefore, the problem is with the pipe, not the tree.

8. *Does the Village give out free wood chips?

Unfortunately the Village is no longer able to offer this service. Try contacting your township.

9. *Does the Village pick up brush?

Free bundled brush pick up is provided by Waste Management, April through December, as part of your refuse service. Brush must be properly bundled. Branches must not exceed 6' in length and 6" in diameter and the bundle must not be larger than 18" in diameter or heavier than 50 lbs.

10. *Who maintains trees in utility easements?

An easement gives utility companies the right to enter private property to maintain their utilities. Easements are still the property of the homeowner and the maintenance of the landscape is the responsibility of the property owner.

11. *Do I need a permit to remove or trim my private tree?

12. *My neighbor has a dead tree in their yard, why doesn't the Village make the remove it?

The Village only has the authority to require private tree removal if the tree has Dutch Elm Disease or is infested with the Emerald Ash Borer.

13. *The Village just put sod in my parkway, who is responsible for watering it?

The contractor is responsible for watering the sod for the first 10 days. After the initial watering period it is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner.
